Passengers Double for Hong Kong

Air Pacific announced it experienced double the sold passengers in March on direct services between Hong Kong and Nadi, when compared to the same period last year.
Since December 2010, Air Pacific has been operating a direct flight three times per week between Asia and the South Pacific. Given this success to date, Air Pacific is optimistic of further growth in the Hong Kong and China markets through its marketing investment with Tourism Fiji and collaboration with other airlines.

Hoteliers Praise Visitor Numbers

News of record number of tourist arrivals for January was welcomed by the tourism industry stakeholders.
Latest official figures released revealed that visitor arrivals stood at 48,455 which was an increase of 3700 tourists or by 8.3 per cent. Fiji Islands Hotel and Tourism Association, president Dixon Seeto said this was good news.

Group Offers Name to Resorts, Hotels

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has given the green-light for its name to be used by the tourism industry in promoting environmentally friendly resort and hotels.
Addressing attendees at an energy conference at the Holiday Inn in Suva on Wednesday, Charlie Arvis of the WWF said: "Our brand name has quite a pull and we're willing to work with resorts, hotels and businesses that use environmentally friendly energy sources, products, and mechanisms in their day to day operations."

Strong Ties can Alleviate Poverty

A New Zealand academic believes that strengthening ties between tourism operators and local communities has the potential to alleviate poverty.
Professor Regina Scheyvens from Massey University, in her research for a new book Tourism and Poverty, looked at Fiji and found growing corporate responsibility from large-scale providers and resorts, combined with Government legislation, could help local communities.

Friendly Fiji makes Forbes list

FIJI is ranked the 12th friendliest country in the world, according to a survey by Forbes magazine.
Fiji was the only South Pacific Island country that was ranked highly in the survey making it the most favoured tourist destination in the region.
The survey was done in consultation with a cross-section of world travellers in 2010. It found Fiji as one of the most welcoming nations.

Weather Update: Tropical Cyclone Bune

Nadi weather office has now named this cyclone TC "Bune" - but at the same time the cyclone alert for Fiji is now cancelled. With this system now south of the latitude of Ono i Lau and moving further southwest there is no longer any direct threat to Fiji from this cyclone.
Look for slow improving trend tomorrow with winds still fresh from the southwest but slowly easing over the central and eastern parts of the country. Winds will be more wet to northwest about northern Lau, Lomaiviti and Taveuni. Showers slowly easing throughout toomorrow. The weekend looking pretty good with cooler and more stable south to southwest airflow pushiong up over Fiji. The one residual effect from the cyclone is the swell, which will be up around 3 metres at times tomorrow and Saturday.

Tourism Students Explore Market

Please be advised that the Hawaii Tsunami warning centre has issued a “Pacific Basin Wide Alert”. There is a possibility that any Tsunami waves would hit Fiji about 3.20 am on Saturday, 12 March 2011 (tomorrow morning).
The CEO has been liaising with Fane Vave – Director of Tourism and awaiting her advise as to the stand being taken by Government. In the meantime we continue to err on the side of caution and continue to send out this warning message until advised otherwise.

Be advised a major earthquake hit Japan approximate 1hour 45 minutes ago. This followed by a Tsunami which appears to have caused major damage. There is a Tsunami Alert for Russia, Northern Marianas and Nauru at present. There is NO alert for Fiji at this time. THE Fiji tourism industry has responded to the Christchurch tragedy and property owners are in talks with national airline Air Pacific on ways to assist victims of the 7.1 earthquake.
Fiji Islands Hotel and Tourism Association president Dixon Seeto revealed this while commending Denarau-based The Terraces Apartment Resort for taking the initiative in offering shelter to those rendered homeless by the disaster.

Resort Comes to Christchurch Aid

A RESORT in Denarau, Nadi, has stepped forward to offer temporary shelter for six families made homeless by the Christchurch earthquake.
Daryl Hook, a director of The Terraces Apartment Resort, said the offer was for families whose homes have been damaged beyond repair.
