Tourism lauds Open Sky Policy

Wednesday, 31 March. Tourism Fiji has welcomed an open sky policy aimed with long-term benefits for the industry. Chairman, Patrick Wong said securing additional airline seat capacity was the key performer for increasing visitor arrivals in the national tourism development plan. Hurricane fails to deter tourists

Wednesday, 31 March. HURRICANE Tomas may have damaged infrastructure in the North but it sure did not keep visitors away from the hotels on Taveuni Island. Taveuni Hoteliers Association president Allan Gortan said they were blessed that tourism attraction on the island was spared from the wrath of Tomas. In making the announcement at a press conference yesterday, the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said: “This is quite an important decision made by Cabinet. Tuesday, 16 March. After a very slow entrance into the north of Fiji TC Tomas is now making a rapid exit from southern Fiji waters as it moves SSE at 28kmph away from Fiji. At 6pm this evening the centre of TC Tomas was nearing Ono i Lau and still packing winds of hurricane force. For the full report and images, please find attached. Tuesday, 16 March. Latest radar image confirms TC Tomas is now accelerating on a SSE track taking it away from Fiji. It still has to pass over the southern islands of the Lau group otherwise weather conditions will improve in the next 24 hours, though only slowly at first. Cancellation Policy - Recommendation

Further to the cessation of flights, implementation of curfews and the restriction of some national transfer operations as a result of Cyclone Tomas, the FIHTA Board of Directors recommends to the membership that the period of fee free deferment be implemented till the 17th of March 2010. Monday, 15 March. At 11am eye of TC Tomas located by satellite over Cikobia. Eye is a little ragged indicating slight weakening over the past 6 hours. At 4am this morning Severe Tropical Cyclone Tomas was located around 200km North-Northeast of Labasa or about 400km northeast of Suva near 14.8S 179.8W.

Sunday, 14 March. At 9pm Severe TC Tomas was located about 220 kilometres north-northeast of Labasa and is moving south-southwest towards Labasa at 15kmph. The cyclone is expected to slow down as steering winds weaken tonight and tomorrow and landfall is expected along the coast east of Labasa between 6pm and midnight tomorrow night. Sunday, 14 March. TC Tomas is now moving more quickly towards Fiji, and at 4pm was located about 290km NNE of Labasa moving SSW at about 18kmph. The cyclone has plateaued intensity wise for the moment with satellite imagery showing a ragged eye and restricted convection in the southwest quadrant suggesting that TC Tomas is being subjected to some unfavourable external conditions which has both sped up the southward movement and kept intensity steady at around 65 knots mean wind or 130kmp mean wind with gusts to 170kmph. Sunday, 14 March. The satellite images of TC Tomas overnight and this morning show a distinct eye formed last night. The presence of an eye is generally taken to confirm that winds have reached hurricane force near the centre, which is Category 3 or 65 knots (130kmph) average wind speed. Saturday, 13 March. At 5pm TC Tomas was now located approximately 500km north of Vanua Levu and moving southwest at about 12kmph. Presently it is officially rated a strong category 2 cyclone by Fiji Met Service with average winds of 100kmph and gusts to 130kmph however the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre has it now at the lower end of Hurricane force (Category 3) with their winds estimated to be averaging 130kmph with gusts to 170kmph. Either way it has certainly intensified in the past 6 hours with satellite imagery showing increasingly tight banding of the convective clouds around the centre with indications an eye is trying to form. Saturday, 13 March. At 6am this morning TC Tomas was located near 11.2S 178.8W or about 600km NNE of Vanua Levu. At this time TC Tomas was estimated to have winds close to the centre gusting up to 120kmph making it a weak Category 2 cyclone in the scale of 1 to 5.

H1N1 vaccine

Thursday, 4 March. ELEVEN Pacific countries including Fiji will benefit from the Pandemic H1N1 vaccine provided by the World Health Organisation. It will be used to immunise people. Pandemic H1N1 has spread around the world since it was detected in April last year. To date it has been attributed with at least 16,226 deaths globally.
