Dengue alert

Ministry of Health spokesman Peni Namotu said there were concerns that the 12 cases of dengue fever reported in the Northern and Western divisions could be the fatal type 2.He said samples had been sent to a lab in Queensland, Australia, and results were expected later this week.

Tourism Fiji looks into branding

The Ministry of Tourism will strengthen Fiji's branding activities for 2012 as part of its commitment towards increasing visitor arrivals into the country. With the 2012 projected visitor arrivals expected to surpass 703,000, the ministry said the outlook for Tourism Fiji is about looking at serious branding strategies. Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary, Elizabeth Powell said positioning Fiji globally increases the opportunity for more visitors to our shores. Air Pacific-American Airlines

The president of the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, Dixon Seeto, has given two big thumbs up to the newly- announced code-share agreement between Fiji's national Airline, Air Pacific, and American Airlines. Mr Seeto said, “This gives an unprecedented access to travellers going both ways. This means that there will be greater security and viability in the service and a greater potential to increase the frequency for such travel.

Budget impacts top FHTA talks

CASTAWAY ISLAND TEMPORARY CLOSURE

Castaway Island, Fiji will be temporarily closed to guests between 29 January, 2012 and 02 March, 2012 to conduct major structural upgrades to our main restaurant, Sundowner Bar and main swimming pool, which will reopen as an adult’s haven pool. The resort will be fully operational with business as usual up to midday on 29 January, 2012 and from 3 March, 2012 onwards.

Green Star for a Kadavu resort

Matava, Fiji’s premier eco-adventure resort received the first PADI Green Star Award in the Asia Pacific region last month. This was in recognition of the resort’s sustainable and eco-conscious environmental activities and business practices. The programme helps PADI dive centers and resorts identify practical actions they can take to protect and preserve the environment.

Resort retains volleyball title

OUTRIGGER on the Lagoon and Vomo Island Resort successfully defended their volleyball titles during the inter-hotel volleyball and netball tournament at Natovi grounds last Friday.Both Outrigger and Vomo defended their titles and it was good to see that other teams came out firing to beat the two defending champions. Sheraton is the new champion in the netball competition," he said.
